Submitting a manuscript to a publisher is always a nerve-wracking experience for an aspiring author. After finally completing the story and finding the courage to send it off, you then have to wait anywhere from several months to more than a year to get a response.
But there are ways to get around the beastly “slush pile”.
One alternative is to attend a writer’s conference where an editor from the preferred publisher will be in attendance. If you can get a private appointment or finesse a quick pitch on the run, you might get the go-ahead to send the manuscript directly to that editor. However, there can be considerable cost involved with this method and it may still take months to hear back. And even then, you may get a rejection letter that gives no indication of what was lacking.
Why not try something that doesn’t require a large outlay of cash, or leaving home, or waiting months to find out if you hit the mark? Why not try a path that will get your work directly and immediately into the hands of a skilled editor?
