A New Frontier for Star Trek

19 May STAR-TREK-INTO-DARKNESS-Poster

Well…I’ve been a bit busy in the past few months, but I’m BACK and promise regular posts from here on.

Having said that…Has anyone out there seen the latest STAR TREK movie?

I did, in IMAX 3D, and I have to say…

O. M. G.!

Kirk-Spock-Black-Shirts

I thought that the first “revamped” movie was brilliantly crafted, providing a much needed updating for today’s audiences while still satisfying diehard “Trekkies” around the world.  The bar was set pretty high after that.

Into Darkness cleared that bar by light years!

I am NOT going to give any spoilers in this, so never fear, but I will say that the movie again plays brilliantly off of original Star Trek components. Some are very subtle, but do contribute to the believability of changes in the original “WoK” story line.

Karl-Urban-Tribble

I think the casting for the new movies is absolute perfection, not the least of which is Karl Urban as Leonard “Bones” McCoy. I love Karl Urban and I have to admit, until I saw the first movie, I had my reservations about him as Dr. McCoy. He plays the good doctor to a “T” and adds a huge dose of sex appeal in the process. I hope he gets a “love interest” somewhere down the line…It IS only fair (hint hint).

Chris Pine as James Tiberius Kirk combinesKirk 2 roguish swagger, blatant sexuality and boyish charm with just the right amount of vulnerability. He has all of Shatner’s confidence and bravado, along with real human flaws that the original Kirk never seemed to show. Struggling and striving to overcome them makes for a much more realistic character that audiences can REALLY relate to.

Spock 1

Zachery Quinto’s portrayal of Spock is probably my favorite of all. Despite his Vulcan quest for logic in all things, his struggle with his own humanity is constant and adds dimensions to his character. These are qualities that the original “Spock Prime” (Leonard Nimoy) only openly acknowledges now, after a long and prosperous life. As with Kirk, glimpses of his basic human weakness make him stronger and all the more endearing.

The rest of the cast members are equally talented and have once again, been able to stay true to Roddenberry’s original characters and concepts, but enhanced them on all levels.

And speaking of enhancements… The special FX are off the charts, especially in IMAX 3D. This is definitely one you MUST SEE on a big screen! The action scenes are epic and the dramatic ones tear at your heart.

All in all…FIVE STARS!

Now… what will I blog about next?

Risky Business

17 Mar

SkydivingFirst a shout-out to my BFF & sister Bitch Goddess, Shannon Emmel – HAPPY BIRTHDAY! You are still one super-sexy broad!

My question to everyone today is…do you tend to take the road less traveled or stick to the familiar path?

I consider myself a “controlled” risk taker. For example, I’ve jumped out of an airplane, but I was firmly strapped to a younger, stronger pro all the way to the ground. I went on a solitary vision quest around the U.S., but I was in my car (with a coffee pot that could be powered by the cigarette lighter) and never ventured far from civilization.

I’m a firm believer that great rewards—whether money, love or memorable experiences—require some level of risk. Though “luck” and “serendipity” can certainly play a vital part, the individual still has to take the chance on whatever falls in her lap. The easy, rational route is to ignore the whisper of an enticing yet risky opportunity if one is in a fairly stable or comfortable situation.

When it comes to writing, I’ve had my share of taking risks as well as taking the “safe” road and I’ve had successes and failures both ways. But honestly, the risky ones were the most fun for me. Believe me, I know how hard it is to work on a story that doesn’t have a fixed market. I received 79 rejections on my futuristic romance novels before finally getting PYRAMID OF DREAMS published in 1992. A number of respected editors and agents repeatedly told me I had to write category or historical romances if I ever wanted to break into publishing. But I wanted to write a cross-genre series even if everyone insisted that was completely unmarketable. And so I ignored all the good advice and broke a barrier.

Twenty years later, I was still receiving letters from readers about those books and this year, I was finally convinced to convert them to e-books. I just finished updating and revising all four of the original books and, once they are uploaded, I plan on working on the fifth, which never made it to bookstores.  Blurbs and excerpts for the first two books, retitled FEVERED (Pyramid of Dreams) and FALCON’S RUN (Topaz Dreams), are available on my site now and I’ll soon add teasers for FIERCE VOYAGER (Stardust Dreams) and FINDING TIME (Stolen Dreams).

Holiday Giveaway!

16 Dec

blue-eyed-santaSo…Now that I have your attention–

I usually try to do something humorous and generally a bit risqué for my posts, as well as  relate it in some way to a writer’s life (and I’m gonna do exactly that), but I couldn’t without first acknowledging the horrible tragedy in Connecticut.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of those devastated families whose lives will never be the same.

On Sunday, December 16th  at 5:00pm EST, I will be lighting a candle and sending love and prayers out to them and I hope you will take the time to join me…wherever you are.

Individually, lighting a candle may seem like a small gesture, but healing doesn’t happen overnight. It happens in painfully small increments over time.

Similarly…it’s the small gestures—like the glow of a single candle—that offer strength and  hope and light in the darkest of times.

Pass this on.

    Tweet it.

Share it with your friends on Facebook

Stumble it! Tumble it! Pin it!

…and share it through any other social media groups you might belong to.

Let’s face it—Friday’s shooting has left its mark on ALL of us. It’s left us feeling hurt and helpless and at a loss to comprehend how something like this could happen.

We will probably never know the “why” of it, but it doesn’t matter at this point.

What DOES matter is that we survive it. That we move past the pain and sorrow and most importantly, that we cherish those we love and the time we have with them.

Because ya just never know how much time you have.

So remember…

Candle. 5pm EST, Sunday, 12/16/12. Pass it on!

Now, back to our regularly scheduled programing.

(There’s a BOOK GIVE AWAY and additional FREE READS included in today’s blog, so keep reading!)

A Fairy Tale for the Modern Princess…

22 Oct guardian-fairy - Copy

Hello my darlings!

It’s been a crazy couple of weeks, ( like that’s anything new for me?) and so I’m a little late in getting my post up.

I consider myself a fairly modern woman and I ran across something this morning that  made me smile.

We all want the “Fairy Tale”… the happy ending, if you will.

As writers, we have the ability to create as many happily-ever-afters as we want.

Having said that, I also came across a HP Fanfic titled  “The Headmaster’s Wife” that provides a TON of smutty happiness (and a great story as well!) for quite a few characters.

If you’re interested, here’s the link:

Also… check out Shadowling Manor for news, teasers and excerpts from the “Passion’s Portal” novels from Ellora’s Cave. This is the place where the fairy tale meets the modern woman!

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the delightfully snarky take on the traditional “Frog Prince” fable below.

Wishing everyone a Happy Monday!

T.G.I.F./F.F. ( and Eye Candy, Too!)

6 Oct

Now that I have your attention…

Did ya miss me? LOL

Life intruded and my apologies for that. Mother nature also had to put her two cents in and trapped me in my house for four days with over three feet of water in my street.

Not fun, but not life threatening and really just more of a nuisance/inconvenience than anything else. Been doing some reading and some research and trying to get some writing done the process…

Notice I said, “trying”?

I’m having trouble with the rapidly (and rabidly) breeding plot bunnies that seem to be overwhelming me in recent weeks.

In an effort to tame the bunny horde, I’m going to be trying something a little different in the coming weeks.

I’m calling this little experiment T.G.I.F./F.F.Day.

In case you’re wondering that’s  NOT  “Thank God It’s Friday” with a stutter!

It stands for…

Thank God It’s Fan/Flash Fiction Day!

You see, in order to stop the madness, I had to start writing some of this stuff down just to get it out of my head so I could then focus on the manuscripts I need to get done.

So, I’ll be posting bits of stories (or links to them) and I’m inviting those of you who might also have similar bits out there in cyberspace to do the same by posting the appropriate links in the comment section of this blog.

You can also use the comment section to, well…comment on the stories/WIP and let me know if you’d like to see more.

Who knows…that might just help me decide what my next project will be!

I’m going to start this off with an Adult Fan Fic (not mine) that I mentioned in a blog I posted in July.

At the time it was posted as a “WIP” but it is now “Complete” so if you’d like a bit of “light reading”  :-)   here’s the link to “Broken Dreams” posted by “onecelestialbeing”.

http://hp.adultfanfiction.net/story.php?no=600095534

In the meantime…Enjoy the delicious male hotness unabashedly displayed herein!

(You didn’t REALLY think I’d do a post without my usual eye-candy fix in it…DID YOU?!).

What can I say?

We ALL need a little inspiration to feed our muses and keep our plot bunnies happily humping away!

Enjoy!

Shannon

Damn! I DO love my job!

How to Get More Fanfiction Comments (Ask Auntie Geek)

12 Aug Toothbrush banner beach

Reblogged from alphabetically inclined:

Some poor soul (or perhaps multiple souls) has been googling "upset by lack of comments on my fanfiction" and evidently has ended up on my blog over twenty times. And I do talk about fanfic a lot, but I've never given any tips on it. So, for the reference of whoever keeps googling into the abyss--and as sort of an homage to agony aunts--I present to you

Great advice for getting the RIGHT kind of attention for fanfic...or ANY kind of fiction! -Shannon

Adult FANFiction—FANtasy on ‘Roids?

29 Jul Snape Collage

Okay. A few weeks ago, I did a blog about “Fifty Shades of Grey” and all the “buzz” associated with it, but I am by no means an expert on the subject.

I write erotic fiction, as well as romantic, fantasy and paranormal fiction…and I have a regular “day job” that is completely separate from my “Author alter ego”.

There are however, those in my “daytime life” who know I write erotica so, of course, they assume I know all about “50 Shades.”  (Go figure!)  They have questions about the book, how it was associated with the “Twilight” Series, etc…and the most confusing thing to them is the concept of “Fan Fiction.”

I mean, seriously—the easiest way to explain FanFic to someone who has never heard of it, is to show it to them and let them read it… at their own peril, of course.  :-)

It had been years since I’d read FanFic of any kind, so I decided to check out some of the popular sites 1) to see what was out there, 2) to try to better explain it when asked and 3) to give folks who were interested a point of reference.

So—as a result I stumbled upon www.adultfanfiction.net.

For anyone who may have NOT seen a FanFic site, the skill level varies from borderline illiterate to polished and ready for publication.

WARNING: Some of it is just flat out disturbing to even the most open-minded reader.

Also, some is so poorly written it is downright painful and NOT in a good BDSM way…

BUT!

Some have the mechanics of writing well in hand, are excellent story-tellers and with a bit of line editing could probably find a legitimate publisher for their original work.

(“Original” as in change the names and story enough to make it “original”… sound familiar?)

So, I got to thinking about a blog I did back in February, “Sex+Magik=AWESOME!” …

One of the things I pointed out was that the fun, magikal, fantasy stuff seemed to cater to the kids and why was that? After reading some of the current FanFic, there’s a LOT of folks out there who think the same thing and have expressed their fantasies through their writing.

Case in point…The Severus Snape character from the Harry Potter series.

Snape was my personal favorite and I wanted him to have a happy ending, or at least be vindicated in the end.

(HUGE Alan Rickman fan here, so the movies may have made me a bit biased on that count :-) )

Anyway…I came across one particular FanFic series and found how the author wove the fantasy around and through the original work, to be quite interesting.

Oh… and the sex was loads of fun, too!

It needs a bit of line-editing, but overall, she did a very nice job of integrating the new “character” into the exisitng story, keeping Snape’s character, IN character and setting up for a happy ending despite the fact that Snape dies in the original…

Hmmmm…or does he?  ;-)

Here’s the LINK to that story, so take a look and then YOU decide and let me know!

In the meantime…if you want a bit of magik and fantasy designed specifically for adults with no chance of copyright controversy at ALL, check out, “Serving Nicole” the first in the magikal “Passion’s Portal” Series. from Ellora’s Cave.

There’s magik, fantasy, other dimensions and of course, LOTS of steaming hot SEX brought to you by authors Marilyn Campbell, Brandi Evans, Nara Malone, Charlotte Stein, and “moi”, Shannon Emmel!

Check out the Shadowling Manor website for a preview of upcoming stories, magical characters and sooooo much more!

I do LOVE my job!  It’s FANtastic! :-)

Happy reading!

Shannon
