Blue-eyed Devils

I have this thing for men with blue eyes. Men who can lure you anywhere, see right through you, beckon you to their bed all with a gaze. It’s funny though, I tend to write heroes with brown eyes. I have no idea why that is. Anyway, I wanted to do a little homage to my favorite blue-eyed men and maybe gather some inspiration for my next hero.

When I first saw him in Star Trek, I could not stop staring at his eyes. They are such a rich color blue, pair that with his scruff and those lips and I’m sold.

The last blue-eyed devil on my list is my favorite. Good God, they had to have coined the phrase bedroom eyes specifically for Ian.

Common Threads

During the course of my writing, I’ve noticed there are common threads that crop up in my books. Some things find their way into stories because they are interests, pieces of my personality or things that I have experience with. When I look back on my published books, and the many projects I have in the works, a few things really stand out.

  1. Food – I think I may have a minor obsession with food. Maybe it comes from the decade I spent in the industry, waiting tables, bartending, even cooking, or maybe it’s just because I really love food. I’m addicted to food porn (pictures of food, not porn with food, naughty people!). I read a lot of food blogs. I love watching shows like Top Chef and Diners Drive-ins and Dives. So yeah, I guess it’s an obsession. My first book, This Side of Heaven has a pancakes scene. Wrapped Around Your Finger is pretty much culinary erotica. There’s naked sushi, southern breakfast, grilled prawns, chai cupcakes and very creative use of ginger. My current project, A Firm Hand, has a kinky dinner scene complete with bitter chocolate sauce. Sensing a theme here? Me too.
  2. Unconventional heroines – I don’t set out to write them. I think they just end up that way. My heroines tend to have tattoos, vibrantly colored hair or piercings. They dress in an unusual fashion, typically an edgier style. I’m sure one day I’ll write about a more conservative heroine. Maybe. Who knows?
  3. Kink – All of my books have some level of kink. I think it’s likely because that’s just how my brain is wired. Even my completely non-kinky paranormal has a spanking scene. Of course Wrapped Around Your Finger is all about kink–spanking, bondage, dominance, submission, forced orgasms and more. The two books I’m writing now are also kink. I’m sensing another theme here, LOL.

I’m sure as my career progresses new threads will form. I don’t want my writing to become stale and predictable, but I think some themes will always be with me. Learning to think outside of my box will be interesting and fun. We shall see where it leads me in the future.

Are We There Yet?

In one blessed week, I will be relaxing on white sandy beach on the Gulf coast of Florida. There is simply not enough coffee to get me through the preparation to get us there. The last minute shopping, endless piles of laundry and packing are enough to drain the life right out of me. And if my husband asks me one more time if we really need all this crap for five days, I think I’m going to kill him. He’ll thank me when the kids have enough to keep them busy and aren’t harassing him every five minutes. Oh and thanks Lauren, for reminding me I’ll need a new bathing suit for this trip. Ugh.

In the midst of all this chaos, I’ve been trying to get some meat into the book I’ve been working on. Sadly that’s not going as well as I would like. It’s hard to focus with all the distractions and the little monsters who need my constant attention. One of the things I’m really looking forward to, aside from the nice sun-tan I plan to acquire, is seeing the sites and being able to really breathe life into the setting for this story. Despite my husband’s protests, I will be bringing the netbook. I never leave home without that and my Nook. A girl needs her survival tools, right? It’ll be nice to relax and read just for the sake of reading. The only time I ever get to do that is the half hour I use to unwind before I go to sleep. A few of the books I’ll be taking with me: Getaway by Cara McKenna, The Dungeon Gourmet by Nara Malone, and Stay Beautiful by Trina M. Lee

Anyway, I set my current project  in a town close to where we’ll be staying and where I grew up. I miss it–the fresh seafood, the glorious sunsets, the Jimmy Buffet way of life. It will be good to go home. We’ve decided to rough it a little and stay in one of the old cottages. I don’t need maid or room service to make me happy. I just want to step out my door and be able to stick my toes in white, sugary sand, hear the waves from my bed and play with my kids. This will be our first family vacation and I’m hoping it doesn’t turn out like Summer Rental. Wish me luck!

Is it hot in here?

Writing has greatly affected the way I watch television and movies. It annoys the hell out of my husband. I like to break things down and try to understand plot and character development. Or I look at the mechanics of a scene–action sequences and love scenes are my favorites to analyze. The big screen is like a smorgasbord of inspiration for a writer.

This, of course, got me thinking of hot sex scenes. When I asked a few people from my little circle which movie moments came to mind, everyone had something different to say. There were a few common threads, but preferences were widely varied. I think the same can be said for erotic romance. One person’s yum may very well be another person’s yuck.

The following are a few of my favorite scenes listed in no particular order. Some include links to clips that are sexually explicit. Enjoy at your own risk.

9 1/2 Weeks – The blindfold “Does this frighten you?” The tension is palpable. I can almost feel the wet chill as John (Mickey Rourke when he was beautiful) torments Elizabeth (Kim Basinger) with that ice cube every time I watch this. The different senses are really played up and it’s a brilliant in its simplicity.

Unfaithful – I can’t How could I not include this one? It’s one of those scenes that leaves me gasping for breath and every muscle in my body tensed. Of course it begins with a heated argument. Intense emotions are a great set up for explosive sex. Paul (Olivier Martinez) follows Connie (Diane Lane) into the hall after she declares their affair over. Their fight gets physical and bleeds over to a rough, but erotic, back and forth. It ends with her begging him to fuck her in whispered tones after he tears her clothing off. Phew, I am getting hot just typing this. It is one of the single hottest moments on film.

The Recruit – The 40 second kiss. A kiss – desperate, and rushed, but perfect. It’s one of those have-to-have-you-right-now moments. James (Collin Farrell) says “It’s not enough time” and I want to melt. Not as explicit as some of the other scenes on my list, but still, very hot.

The Secretary – Come into my office… - Other than the painfully obvious, there are a few smaller details that really pull me into this scene. I love that you can so clearly see the moment he decides to take this beyond a normal working relationship. His soft, commanding tone always gets me.

The Queen of the Damned – bite me Change in the House of Flies by The Deftones really makes this scene for me. Of course the dangerous quality to the chemistry shared between Akasha (Aaliyah) and Lestat (Stuart Townsend) is also extemely erotic.

Why yes I am. It’s my birthday and I can if I want to. The unfortunate thing about today is that I also happen to have the flu. Ugh. Thank you universe for that wonderful gift. So yes, this post is short on content, but I’m giving something away so you forgive me, right?

I hate being sick especially  on my birthday. Meh, I’ll live. Thirty six is not twenty one so there are no big celebratory events planned for this evening. No bar crawls for me, more like a hot bath with a good book, Thai takeout and an upteenth viewing of The Secretary. Exciting huh?

Crazy, sexy, scary?

Considering I’m new to Passionate Reads I’d thought about doing a good old introduction post, but what’s the fun in that? Since I don’t want to bore you with the mundane details of who I am or plug my books, I figured I’d jump right in. You don’t mind do you?

For a bit of background, I’m absolutely crazy about horror, have been from the age of five when I would watch old black and white monster movies on Saturday afternoons. I am also crazy about writing sexy stories. When Ellora’s Cave announced the erotic horror line, Shivers, I was downright gleeful. I currently have a project in the works that fits it well. Writing it has been so much fun, but I’ve been a little concerned with how it will be received.

Is there a place in erotic romance for horror?

Personally, I think horror has always had elements of eroticism even as far back as the classics. Dracula, in it’s own way, is a very erotic tale and it was penned over a century ago. I know what you’re thinking. The eroticism in Bram Stoker’s Dracula is a far cry from today’s burn-your-fingers hot fiction. And you’re right, but my point is horror and sex have always had a close bond. I think it’s much more prevalent in film than in fiction, but it thrives in both.

If we look at the slasher films of the Seventies and Eighties, we’d be hard pressed to find one that doesn’t have a sex scene or a boob shot. So why is it some horror fans, who don’t bat an eye at viscera mind you, cringe when they stumble on a sex scene in a horror novel? Of course that hasn’t stopped some of today’s top horror authors from including a good romp in all its explicit detail.

On the other side of that coin, will erotic romance fans be receptive to a good scare or gore with their sexual heat?

The book I’m working on now definitely has its share of stomach-churning moments. For all intents and purposes, it’s a zombie book. There just happens to be an intense relationship thrown in the middle of all the mayhem. I can admit, it’s a self indulgent project. I have no idea if it will sell. I hope someone somewhere will be interested in a story like this one.

I want to know what you think. Would you read a sexy story that was also scary? Are there certain elements of horror that would turn you off? Aside from necrophilia and such. I’m demented, but not that demented.
